23 августа 1944 года. В пограничный город в Трансильвании доходят сведения о перевороте, совершенном в Бухаресте. Командующий гарнизоном лейтенант Ион Опря получает приказ от новых властей во чтобы то ни стало задержать продвижение немецких войск, которые после выхода Румынии из войны пытаются прорваться вглубь территории бывшего союзника. Имеющимися под командованием офицера силами сделать это невозможно, но на помощь кадровым военным приходит рабочее ополчение, во главе со старым коммунистом Думой.
Приникнув носом к стеклу, четырехлетний мальчуган Ионел с огромным интересом следит за играющими в мяч на улице ребятами. Отец его, школьный учитель, потерял место работы. Теперь он напрасно обивает пороги различных учреждений, ведь в буржуазной Румынии не так-то просто найти работу. Ионел каждый вечер ждет отца и в ожидании его мечтает — ему бы очень хотелось получить ко дню рождения настоящий желтый мяч. Отец понимает, что достать деньги и купить мяч необходимо. Ведь мальчик — калека, и мяч для него — это надежда выздороветь...
