Действие фильма просходит в начале 50-х годов прошлого века и в наши дни. Главная героиня — Сабина, «серая мышка», которой уже за тридцать. В ее жизни явно не хватает мужчины. Ее матери известно об этом лучше всех, поэтому она пытается любой ценой найти для дочки подходящего кандидата в мужья. Всю ситуацию контролирует бабушка, эксцентричная дама с острым язычком, от которой не укроется ни одна тайна. Ни один из поклонников не вызывает интереса Сабины. Но в один прекрасный день появляется обаятельный, умный и дьявольски симпатичный Бронислав. Его появление вызывает серию неожиданных событий, которые проявят другую сторону женской натуры…

A small-time racketeer Stefek evades mob bosses by passing himself off as a mentally unstable cleptomaniac and laying low in an asylum. The racketeer and his closest devotee escape from the asylum and find work at the opera. Stefek becomes stage-doorman and soon discovers that the opera doubles as a brothel.

But problems arise as he is taunted by his peers and, longing for his missing father, burns with resentment for his new communist stepfather.
