Knyaz Boris I reached the most important spiritual insight - the country needed a single language and script. It accepts students of Cyril and Methodius, creating Ohrid and Preslav Literary School. Prince Boris I is ruling in the late 9th century. In his youth, he, the brilliant statesman and diplomat, is experiencing heavy defeats in the wars he wages against his neighbors. Nonetheless, he manages not to cede any territories to the enemies. Under his rule, Bulgaria breaks with paganism and joins the Christian community, paying an exorbitant price, a heavy death toll, but there is no other way. The adoption of Christianity in 864 was a historical event of great significance. It guaranteed Boris I much need peace with the Eastern Roman Empire and allowed him to merge the numerous tribes inhabiting the country into a unified nationality and later to found a state. Boris I introduced the Slav script, thus turning Bulgaria into the cradle of Slav culture.

A young journalist comes across interesting report material: talented marine engineer Maria died while on duty. Her story turns out to be quite a puzzle though - people who knew her are not willing to share much. Trying to make them speak, the journalist presents himself as her son. He hopes to dig up the truth about her and spares no effort, ending up at the bureau for investigation. The report he's writing never gets published but his belief system certainly gets challenged.

Исторический фильм о борьбе за независимость Болгарии в конце XII- начале XIII века. В 1197 году, после убийства царя Петра, Болгарское царство возглавил его младший брат - Калоян. С юга и востока наступают византийцы, с запада - мадьяры, с севера - куманы. А внутри страны постоянные междоусобицы бояр мешают укреплению мощи государства. Выдающийся дипломат Калоян сумел в сложной обстановке международных отношений, среди интриг папского двора отстоять независимость Болгарии. Он заключил выгодные мирные договоры с некоторыми противниками, а внутри страны ему удалось с помощью народных масс разбить предателей - бояр.

Далеко по склонам Родопских гор разносит эхо гулкие взрывы. Здесь трудятся геологи-разведчики, строятся шахты, возникают рабочие посёлки. Повсюду в Болгарии видны приметы новой жизни. Но упорно сопротивляются новому древние, обветшавшие обычаи, поддерживаемые среди жителей горной деревушки мусульманским духовенством со времён многовекового турецкого ига. Зюлкер выдали замуж в пятнадцать лет. Бабушка, которая в её годы имела двух детей, успокаивает внучку: «В старину говорили, что парень женится, когда захочет, а девушка — когда просватают…». Но непокорная Зюлкер нарушила обычай предков, чтобы учиться, работать, жить самостоятельно.
