A narration of episodes from the life of the famous Czech poet, Karel Hynek Mácha. Throughout the film, we witness a deep analysis of Mácha's complex character (his relation to another Czech writer of the time Josef Kajetán Tyl, his unbearable jealousy, his solitude, his attitude to nature,etc.) on the well-depicted historical background with all its particularities.

Based on the only extensive prose work by the surrealist painter Josef Capek, Shades of Fern most resembles the philosophical fairy tales and fables of Josef’s older brother, the legendary Czech novelist and playwright Karel Capek. Two young poachers, more boys than men, kill a gamekeeper when they are caught illegally hunting. Panicked, they retreat into a forest that grows steadily more forbidding and deadly as their fear for the future—and guilt over their action—mounts. Loosely based on hundreds of oral folk tales and legends that haunt the woods of Czechoslovakia, Vlácil’s contemporary updating artistically underscores the relationship between man and nature, crime and punishment, isolation and society, and guilt and memory.

The drama - filled with many of Dvorak's compositions - begins when the composer suddenly decides to cut a concert in London and return home. While on the train, flashbacks reveal his relationship to his wife Anna and her sister Josefina. Мельник, когда не было работы, ходил по полям и горам, слушал землю, внимал звукам и голосам природы, знал много, еще больше умалчивал. В ту пору к регенту был послан высокопоставленный иезуит тайно в простой рясе капеллана, разведать вольнодумные настроения в народе и пресечь еретиков...

Ноябрь 1944 года. Советская Армия гонит немецко-фашистские орды, отступающие по всему фронту. Вместе с советскими бойцами на территорию своей родины вступает чехословацкая танковая бригада во главе с командиром Сташеком. Между тем, окопавшееся в Лондоне эмигрантское чешское правительство, опасаясь того, что танковая бригада может стать основой подлинно народной армии, отдаёт приказ о роспуске бригады. Осуществляя этот приказ, начальник штаба бригады капитан Ренч ведёт внутри бригады подрывную деятельность. Коммунисту-политруку Томешу вместе с другими патриотами удаётся сорвать антинародные замыслы врага. Политрук убеждает командира Сташека обратиться за помощью к Советскому Главному Командованию. И вот советские танки торжественно передаются чехословацкой бригаде. На плечах отступающего врага чешские патриоты врываются в Остраву.
