"Busch singt" consists of 6 films "About the first part of our century" and does not present Ernst Busch only as a singer but is a film with and about Busch as a chronicler and fighter for communist ideals of his time. Konrad Wolf died during the production, he directed part 3 "1935 oder Das Faß der Pandora" and part 5 "Ein Toter auf Urlaub".

The core of this most personal of the Thorndikes’ projects are Annelie’s diary entries: Her story is to be the starting point for a kind of all-German ‘Heimatfilm’ that praises the utopian power of the GDR and sharply condemns Federal German wrongs, but finds transcendent beauty on both sides of the wall. Over the course of production, however, the visionary dimension of the project was progressively trimmed down, though it’s still tangible everywhere in the compromised final version: The intensity of its pathos is both oppressive and enchanting; some historical simplifications and ideological twists and bends may be hair-raising, but they still achieve the desired effect.

Два сводных брата, Клаус и Улли, любят одну и ту же девушку. Встретившись с Евой, окончательно порвавшей с Клаусом, и узнав о её тяжелом положении, Улли, забыв свою обиду, первым протягивает ей руку помощи. Из беседы с Евой Улли узнал о намерении Клауса бежать на Запад. Сознавая свою гражданскую ответственность за легкомысленный поступок брата, Улли решает помешать ему. Зная место, где Клаус может перебраться в Западный Берлин, Улли, рискуя жизнью, задерживает его.

О любви немецкого солдата к еврейской девушке Рут, угоняемой фашистами в лагерь смерти, о любви, которая заставила юношу пересмотреть свои взгляды на жизнь и вступить в ряды борцов против фашизма.
