Video Theory Remix
Voice
The a remix of the second in a four-part video art series produced by duo Christiane Dellbrügge and Ralf de Moll in the early-'90s, this piece continues the series' themes of incorporating art theory into video art, particularly through the juxtaposition of words and images. Here, text from the original video exploring the intersections and conflicts between electronic media and the creation/reception of new media art is dissected into individual words that are then pair with split-second images and sound clips. Further, the original soundtrack has been removed and replaced with a more conventional, drum-and-base like soundtrack; the sequence of words-and-images has been sped up; and a Japanese speaker now presents a vocal accompaniment to the text.
The Fall Of A Queen, Or The Taste Of Fruit To Come
Director
This video opera incorporates improvised singing and some unusual instruments. The narrative centres around a Queen who, fearing revolution, seeks to find out what goes on outside her castle walls. Her personal joys and emotions and those of her people are woven into a collage of sound and imagery climaxing in the attempted murder of the young crown Prince and the siege of the castle.
Ohi Ho Bang Bang
Director
Holger Hiller and Karl Bonnie create different sounds from every item in a room, from those sounds a song is made by means of cutting, where every sound is still in sync with the video footage of its creation.
The Branks
Director
“Death – Begetting” : symbolic physical death, to enter the Silence; the negation of banality, of everyday language, of non-stop talking; certain “words” of power that guide us to the Silence… A brank, according to Aleister Crowley, is an old Scottish device, designed for holding closed the mouth of a woman – the woman (seen in Tarot, shutting a lion’s mouth) who signifies Strength. Thus it implies the Silence is more powerful than the (physical) Strength.
James Bonk in Matt Blackfinger
