Píše se 13. století. Království českému a markrabství moravskému vládne Přemysl Otakar II. Na zásnuby, které mají usmířit znesvářené rody pánů z Dubé a z Vartemberka, vysílá král svého zástupce v severních Čechách, správce královského hradu Bezdězu, Oldřicha z Chlumu (Karel Roden). Cestou na hrad najdou Oldřich a jeho pomocníci (Jan Dolanský, David Matásek) stopy po loupežné vraždě neznámého kupce. Na vartemberském panství se Oldřich setkává s Ludmilou (Klára Issová), dcerou Markvarta z Vartemberka, kterou zná od jejího dětství. Ludmila se mu svěří, že se nechce vdát za Beneše z Dubé (David Prachař), přestože jejich svatba je podmínkou křehkého míru mezi oběma rody. Během slavnostní hostiny, pořádané na Oldřichovu počest, je zavražděn purkrabí (Miloš Vávra). Podezření padne na loutnistu (Saša Rašilov), jehož snoubenku se purkrabí pokusil zneužít.

This feature film based on the events of 1938 is a chronicle of the futile efforts of the Czechoslovak president Edvard Benes (Jirí Pleskot), politicians and ordinary citizens, to save the independence and the territorial integrity of the state from the advance of Hitler's Germany. On the 29th of March 1938 the leader of the Sudeten Germans Henlein (Werner Ehrlicher) has a meeting with Hitler (Gunnar Möller). Hitler orders him to intensify pressure on the Czechoslovak government. On the 24th of April in Carlsbad, the Sudetendeutsche Partei (Sudeten German Party) decides upon eight demands that are unacceptable to the Czechoslovak President, since they would ultimately lead to the break-up of the Republic. Benes still shows a certain willingness to negotiate, and Henlein resents this. The Germans are determined to make further negotiations impossible through incidents and violence.

The life of the famous French writer Alexander Dumas the Elder. Screenwriter Jaroslav Dietl did not hide his admiration for this literary giant, and in addition to the screenplay he also wrote a three-part TV play about Dumas (starring Vladimír Menšík). In the Prague Old Town and the adjoining streets there is always plenty of life. Housewives shop, beggars arouse sympathy, the Salvation Army tries to put the godless on the road to salvation by hymns and sermons, and Ferdys Pistora hunts in the pockets of his fellow men and isn't even put off by the presence of an officer of the law. Ferdys sets off to burgle villa of the banker Rosenstok, but a fire breaks out in the house and Ferdys ends up saving the banker's two small children. At home he is visited by representatives of the Salvation Army, Captain Kosterka and Terezka, with whom Ferdys instantly falls in love.

Shortish forty-year old Ludvík Podzimek, lute and flute player in a Prague orchestra, is far from being an attractive man. He is nevertheless generally considered a great 'Don Juan'. Women take up with him out of a certain motherly compassion and Ludvík's tender heart does not allow him to split with any of them. His lovers thus accumulate and cause him numerous troubles.

A dramatic story from the setting of a youth de tention center. Youngster Jakub, out of delusory solidarity, gets convicted of theft and goes to prison in place ofthe "sheriff" of his gang. He naively hopes that the sheriff will appreciate his gesture and leaves the stolen goods in a safe hideaway to later divide them fairly among the gang members. This conviction gives Jakub the strength to endure the unbearable conditions in the center. But reality is often much harsher than naive ideals and hollow relations in the gang.

Miss Nováková reports to Major Tuma (Karel Höger) from the police about the disappearance of her roommate, the model Zuzana. Shortly afterwards, a film director named Konrád (Otomar Krejca) asks Tuma to cooperate on a new cinéma-vérité film describing the story of Zuzana's disappearance.

Однако суд признает Кудрну виновным и приговаривает к трехмесячному заключению, которое тот уже отбыл в тюрьме во время следствия. Но сам Кудрна не согласен с решением суда, он считает себя невиновным.
