Сентябрь 1943 г. Италия объявила о капитуляции. Но гитлеровцы хотят принудить ее по-прежнему сражаться за фюрера, за фашизм. Неаполь оккупирован немцами. На одной из площадей разыгрывается странная сцена: немцы публично расстреливают молодого, ни в чем не повинного моряка-итальянца. За минуту до этого этот юноша так ослепительно улыбался, радуясь перемирию... Насильно согнанным на площадь неаполитанцам предложено аплодировать в момент расстрела. Под дулами автоматов, люди аплодируют, не скрывая своих слез и заглушая громкие рыдания...

In a small Italian town, the local youngsters realize that their youth is coming to an end and marriage will soon follow. They gather together for one last time in an attempt to revive their younger days, but this comes to a dismal conclusion. Gradually it dawns on the group that childhood is over and the next stage in human growth must be faced.
