Matylda (Jaroslava Ticha), who lives in the Czech countryside, is trying to arrange burial plans for her dying husband, Jan (Ludvik Kroner). While Matylda hopes to have a funeral for Jan in the small town where they once lived, there are complications. Years earlier, Jan spoke out against the Communist government and was consequently expelled from the town. When Matylda fails to convince a local politician to allow the ceremony, she uses her husband's funeral as a public show of dissent.

A West German businessman Friedrich Schmidt is arriving to Czechoslovakia with private mission and mission for Intelligence service. This feature film based on the events of 1938 is a chronicle of the futile efforts of the Czechoslovak president Edvard Benes (Jirí Pleskot), politicians and ordinary citizens, to save the independence and the territorial integrity of the state from the advance of Hitler's Germany. On the 29th of March 1938 the leader of the Sudeten Germans Henlein (Werner Ehrlicher) has a meeting with Hitler (Gunnar Möller). Hitler orders him to intensify pressure on the Czechoslovak government. On the 24th of April in Carlsbad, the Sudetendeutsche Partei (Sudeten German Party) decides upon eight demands that are unacceptable to the Czechoslovak President, since they would ultimately lead to the break-up of the Republic. Benes still shows a certain willingness to negotiate, and Henlein resents this. The Germans are determined to make further negotiations impossible through incidents and violence.

Jan Zika is the legendary hero of the communist resistance movement during World War II and leading functionary of the second underground Central Committee of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia.

In the Prague Old Town and the adjoining streets there is always plenty of life. Housewives shop, beggars arouse sympathy, the Salvation Army tries to put the godless on the road to salvation by hymns and sermons, and Ferdys Pistora hunts in the pockets of his fellow men and isn't even put off by the presence of an officer of the law. Ferdys sets off to burgle villa of the banker Rosenstok, but a fire breaks out in the house and Ferdys ends up saving the banker's two small children. For this he is celebrated as a hero and gets a place as an errand boy with the Rosenstoks. At home he is visited by representatives of the Salvation Army, Captain Kosterka and Terezka, with whom Ferdys instantly falls in love.

In the forest near the village of Drahovice, a nurse from the local health center is found murdered. Three months ago, another young woman died nearby and a sexual motive was proved in the case of her murder. In the case of the nurse, the motives are not so clear. Two criminologists from Prague - Major Kalas (Rudolf Hrusínský) and Lieutenant Varga (Radoslav Brzobohatý) - patiently collect all available leads and question the villagers.

Зузанна Витова приезжает в Прагу к своему жениху Петру Клике, но не застает его дома. Ей негде остановиться. Сотрудник ЗАГСа Карел Янский помогает Зузанне в поисках жениха и ночлега. Но всё безрезультатно. Зузанна ночует в доме Карела, жена которого, Магда, — на даче. На другой день вернувшаяся Магда обвиняет мужа в измене. Об этом узнает Петр и тоже верит, что Зузанна его обманула. Тщетно пытаются Карел и Зузанна опровергнуть возводимую на них клевету. Только назначенное на другой день бракосочетание Петра и Зузанны спасает положение. Оба «обвиняемых» заявляют, что сожалеют о случившемся, и просят их простить. Все удовлетворены, и вспыхнувшие волнения улеглись.

В маленьком городке на «Диком западе» крепкие парни развлекаются дракой, стрельбой и пьют виски. Нравы там грубы и жестоки, закон один — «Кто кого раньше застрелит». Даже шериф не в силах этому противостоять. Но однажды в салун заходит Он — Лимонадный Джо, и в городке начинается новая жизнь. В него влюбляются все первые красавицы городка. Секрет популярности героя «Коло-локовый лимонад» — единственный напиток, самого меткого стрелка и ловкого наездника.

На ракетном заводе в Страконице готовится к пробному полёту космический корабль. В предполётной суете выясняется, что командир корабля недоволен обивкой кресла. Рабочий-обивщик Йозеф отправляется исправлять свой брак. А в это время на космодроме оркестр в боевой готовности, на трибуне начальство с космонавтами, торжество в самом разгаре. Йозеф же размазывает клей по креслу, попивая пивко, как вдруг нога соскальзывает и он наступает на кнопку «Старт» на пульте управления. Бабах - и корабль отправляется вместе с Йозефом к звёздам. Начальство в панике, можно представить себе реакцию космонавтов, напрасно сидевших три подготовительных года на грибах и водорослях. "КТО ЭТО БЫЛ?!" - кричит главный начальник. Через 500 лет наш горе-космонавт возвращается на Землю в компании со сверхразвитым инопланетным существом и обнаруживает абсолютно новый, неузнаваемый и совершенный, утопический мир, изобилующий множеством технических приспособлений, облегчающих жизнь.
