The story of 1947, when Bender's band, after a beating of the Nazis, tried to fight their way through Czechoslovakia to Austria. They come out of the forest to occupy the family's rural estate, kidnap doctors to help heal one of their wounded.

The 11-year old Jakub is living in a children's home, when he is picked up by his father. The father has been "away" for four years, the boys mother doesn't want the child. Jakub gradually finds out, that his father is hiding a secret from him. But they gradually manage to build a warm relationship and a promising new life in the city.

XVII век. Инквизиция держит в страхе всю Европу. И простой люд и знать верят, что повсюду обитают ведьмы. Для скорого суда и расправы над колдуньями по городам и селам разъезжают жестокие мракобесы-инквизиторы. Не гнушаясь изощренными пытками и обманом, они повсюду устраивают «азартную» охоту на ведьм. В страшных мучениях жены оговаривают мужей, дети — отцов, среди всеобщего страха целые семьи идут на костер, лишь немногие решаются выступить против карающей длани святой церкви. Tóna Bohácek (Pavel Landovský) has been a great worry to his mother, Mrs Bohácková (Stella Zázvorková). All his friends equal in age are already married and some of them even have children - only Tóna still has nothing. Mother Bohácková thus publishes an ad in the Lonely Hearts column on behalf of her son. From among the girls who responded, she picks out Janicka, a girl from the neighboring village, and then forces Tóna to go to have a look at her and bring her home. The date of the two young people, however, does not turn out well due to the embarrassment on both sides, and Tóna returns home drowning in the feeling of ridiculousness. On the way, he picks up hitchhiker Kveta (Regina Rázlová) from Prague. Only then, he realizes that the mother with her festive dinner is waiting for him and Janicka at home and thus asks Kveta to substitute for the girl from the ad.
