Голова героя отрублена, а рот набит монетами. Золотая цепочка, которую он купил в день своей гибели, пропала. Судебный пристав (фогт) поручает аптекарю Мельхиору, умеющему разговаривать с мёртвыми, расследовать преступление. Умный юноша обнаруживает, что убитый искал таинственного „таллиннского узника“ и следы ведут в Доминиканский монастырь. Развязывается чудовищная череда кровопролитий — любому, кто соприкоснётся с этой тайной, грозит смерть. В то же время аптекарь сомневается в своем ученике, который, кажется, что-то скрывает...
