Начиная с 1944 года детские дома, созданные сразу после освобождения Франции, принимали сирот и спрятанных по всей стране детей, а с 1945 года - малолетних узников концлагерей. Тысячи детей в этих домах приходили в себя после войны. Действие фильма происходит с сентября 1944 по январь 1946 годов и рассказывает о том, как к детям возвращается надежда, как они пытаются выжить после кошмара. Это гимн жизни и счастью тех, кто выжил.
