An ambitious, enthusiastic young geologist is entangled in bureaucratic red tape when he tries to drill for oil. Frustrated with the situation, he torches an abandoned mill, ignores his girlfriend, and fights with his friends who do not share his exuberance about the project.

Польская Народная Республика, 50-е годы. Актёры одного театра готовятся к постановке спектакля по чехословацкой пьесе социалистического реализма "Бригада шлифовщика Каргана". Для большинства актёров старшего поколения - это чуждый и непонятный репертуар, для молодых наоборот - они полны энтузиазма. Это порождает конфликт в труппе. Чтобы познакомиться с реальной жизнью рабочих, режиссёр решает вместе с актёрами посетить близлежащую фабрику. Оказалось, что проблемы, поднимаемые в пьесе и возникшие в актёрской труппе, те же, что и на фабрике. Это конфликт поколений между старыми работниками и рационализаторами...
