1907. The Porto Chamber has just been won by the Republicans, in full monarchy, three years away from the revolution. Republican ideas are taking hold and monarchical institutions are beginning to be shaken. However, the Sociedade Gastronómica de Lisboa resists and apparently is one of the strongest bastions of the monarchy. But winds of change blow within the walls of the traditional and conservative Society. A young member, Dr. Duarte Rodrigues, decides to run for president, held by the mysterious Prositt, who made his fortune in Africa. Duarte, stating that he does not want to betray the illustrious president, but as he is somewhat worn out and hopelessly dazzled by the leadership, he is able to artfully convince others to convince him, Duarte, to move forward, serving them for this. , in a dinner of taking power, a dish of unexpected excellence and very original.

The film is liberally inspired by the period when Eça de Queiroz was Portuguese Consul in Cuba, when still a Spanish colony. Eça de Queiroz struggles against local authorities in his defense of Chinese workers, brought to the sugar plantations by greedy middlemen and exploited as slaves. Two parallel stories unfold, that of a Chinese girl which Eça de Queiroz saves from the clutches of one of the island’s most powerful slave owners, and the other of a romance involving a young American woman on holidays in Havana.

Lourenço is the son of Francisco Figueiredo, a soccer coach in the beginning of a very promising career. Francisco is fired and Lourenço must transfer to a public high school whose students are predominantly from a ghetto near Lisbon. While Lourenço is fighting to fit into a new and harsh reality, he also helps his father find his lost dignity. Hope is a strange place.

The formerly great Swiss hotel which Valentin's family owned when he was a boy has been emptied and is about to be torn down. He revisits the magical site's empty halls and ballrooms.

The young girl, Antónia Margarida Castelo Branco, is handed over by her mother to Brás Telles de Meneses because of the obscure interests between rural aristocratic families in the North. Brás is a ruined man, a bohemian with a reputation for violence and erratic behaviour. Antonia’s fortune is the first sacrifice made by the young wife. Fascinated by the man who humiliates and ill-treats her, she follows him in a pilgrimage to increasingly barren lands, to increasingly less hospitable houses.
