Полиция пытается выяснить подробности у старого пастуха Костантино, одиноко бродящего под дождём посреди руин. Он только что потерял своего сына Марио, владельца фермы, погибшего в попытке остановить огонь. Он может лишиться внука, которого носит жена Марио, оставшаяся живой, но попавшая в больницу.
