A watchmaker helps them all, the only man of flesh and blood in this country. As if being a doctor, he accepts those who have any complaints. Life goes on, until one day the unexpected happens.

Три студента киевской бурсы отправились на каникулы. По дороге они заплутали в темноте и попросили ночлега на отдалённом хуторе. Глубокой ночью к одному из студентов, Хоме Бруту, пришла старуха-хозяйка, вскочила на него верхом и понеслась над полями, лесами, озёрами… Измученный Хома сотворил молитву, которая ему помогла освободиться от чар ведьмы и убежать.
Через несколько дней богатый пан сотник, выполняя последнюю волю умершей красавицы-дочери, приказал доставить к себе Хому Брута, дабы тот три ночи читал над панночкой молитвы, и посулил Хоме после окончания обряда отпевания щедрую награду. Если же Хома попытается увильнуть от отпевания — он, волею сотника, будет жестоко наказан.
