The film was inspired by one of the most important documentaries shot by Krzysztof Kieślowski, Talking Heads (1980). The director asked his interlocutors seemingly simple questions, such as “Who are you?” and “What do you want?”.

The screenplay for Khibula was inspired by the real events taking place in Georgia briefly after the country regained its independence in 1991. Zviad Gamsakhurdia, the first president of Georgia, elected by the majority of votes, was driven into exile by coup d'etat. Even though he returned to regain power soon after, political clashes once again forced him to flee into the mountains. Based on the final chapter of the first President's life, the film starts off by following his journey accompanied and pursued by both friend and foe.

Несколько лет назад Тедо и Кето вынуждены были оставить дом в Абхазии. Гражданская война отняла у них все и разделила их семью — в Абхазии остался отец Тедо. У Кето есть любовник, и она совсем не думает о том, чтобы воссоединиться с мужем. Тедо сильно переживает неверность матери и однажды решает убежать к отцу. На пути в Абхазию Тедо встречает разных людей и далеко не везде мальчика ожидает радушный прием. Но это нелегкое путешествие поможет ему понять много важных вещей, в том числе и то, что трава все-таки не всегда зеленее на другом берегу.
