June 3rd 1991, Mount Unzen, Japan. On this particular morning all eyes are turned to the volcano. Journalists, photographers, cameramen, scientists, politics… They are all listening to each beat coming from the heart of the volcano. Katia and Maurice Krafft, the famous vulcanologists, adventurers and specialists of killer volcanoes, are hoping to witness an incredible explosion. They are joined by their young friend and colleague, the American, Harry Glicken. They are all going to die.

Nat drives on the interstate with his two young daughters in the back seats, when a car drives by and an unknown guy shoots one of his daughters dead for no reason. Nat's life is shattered. He becomes obsessed with finding the killers, assaults two men, kills one, goes to jail, is left by his wife, grows old estranged from his other daughter. We see the action first through Nat's eyes, then via Brautigan, the cop in charge of the investigation, and finally from the perspective of the remaining daughter Margo. The deconstructed narrative echoes the chaos within Nat and emphasizes the fact that the characters are out of tune with one another, which is the meaning of the original title.

Young Alice (Ambre Boukebza) hitchhikes into the city to seek out her music-executive dad (Bernard Le Coq) but instead becomes friends with a singing star (Ophelie Winter, portraying herself), learns dancing from African trashman Rudy (Ashanti), polishes her singing skills with an assist from vocalist Nathalie (Lea Drucker), and is romanced by producer Jeremy (Patrick Forster-Delmas).
