Radha lives with her widowed dad and is of marriageable age. Accordingly her details her provided to a marriage-broker, Avtar, who also doubles as a Ved (Village Doctor). He brings the proposal before Shriram and his wife, Sita. They approve of Radha and show her photograph to Shriram's brother, Dr. Madhu, who agrees to marry her. The marriage is celebrated with great pomp and ceremony in the entire village. It is then that the Shriram, Sita, and Madhu find out that Radha has a serious illness - a fact that was known to Avtar - but not communicated to them. Gangaram, a farmer, has two younger step-brothers, Moti and Shivram. Supported by Gangaram, Moti has gone to Calcutta to be a lawyer, while Shivram is an illiterate farmer like Gangaram. A series of unfortunate events leads to an estrangement between the three brothers while they face the threat of losing their land to a local greedy moneylender.

Wealthy Shankar and well-educated Suresh are cousins and the best of friends. A marriage is arranged for each of them (Shankar's with Madhumati, Suresh' with Shanta), but Shankar's father is against the couples meeting in person and instead each cousin meets with the other's intended. Oonche Log (Hindi: ऊँचे लोग, lit. High Society People) was a 1965 Hindi film directed by Phani Majumdar. It was based on play Major Chandrakant by noted Tamil film director-screenwriter, K. Balachander. The main character roles of this film were played by Ashok Kumar, Raaj Kumar and Feroz Khan. Its lyrics were composed by Majrooh Sultanpuri and the music was given by Chitragupta. The film was shot at Vauhini Studios, Chennai, was also noted as first big hit of newcomer Feroz Khan, who was noted for his sensitive performance against veterans like Raaj Kumar and Ashok Kumar. At the 13th National Film Awards it won the award for Second Best Feature Film in Hindi. It was later remade by K. Balachander himself as Major Chandrakanth (1966), starring J. Jayalalitha and Muthuraman.

Sibling rivalry abounds in this film about two privileged brothers, Anwar and Nawab, and the women who come between them. Raj Kumar is a wealthy businessman and dislikes everything ugly. Dr. Mathur fills the rest of the blanks for Pyare, and arranges a song and dance play and hopes that Raj will overcome his dislike for his now-grown son.

When Paro goes to meet with Kamli's maternal uncle, she is shunned, humiliated because they are poor and Nandu is unemployed, & considered a trouble-maker.
