Бездетная пара берет к себе в дом полено, своей формой отдаленно напоминающее маленького человечка. Полено оживает и превращается в самого настоящего ребенка. Супруги не могут поверить своему счастью, однако вскоре маленькая девочка, пожирающая все, что попадается ей на глаза, приводит их в отчаяние.
В деревню приезжает Иван Секал, который жил здесь когда-то. Незаконнорожденный сын, он был брошен своим отцом отца и в течение многих лет был изгоем и терпел издевтельства жителей, которые называли его «сволочью». В 1930-е годы он воевал в гражданской войне в Испании на стороне революционеров, поддерживаемых в частности III Рейхом. Теперь, служа нацистским оккупантам, и с их помощью Секал рассчитывает отомстить за годы унижений. Adam is a young farmer. As a child, fleeing the bleak reality of his mother's life as a prostitute, he tumbled from a mountain and was mentally injured. Years later, his mother is dying, so Adam sells their only cow to pay for medicine. Rosa, a beautiful young maid, fleeing the sexual exploitation of a wealthy butcher, climbs up to join them on their remote farm and dares to become part of Adam's world. A cycle of life begins again, in a remote turn-of-the-century village tied to the land and its animals.
Francin, manager of a small-town brewery, has a charming wife whose abundant blonde locks are an adornment to the town. Maryska looks ethereal but loves meat and beer, while Francin is an ascetic. The strict members of the brewery board of directors come to audit the accounts, but are diverted from concentrating on Francin's detailed reports by Maryska, who has organized a pig-killing feast and is ably assisting the butcher. When she invites the old curmudgeons on the board to enjoy the fresh pork, they are too happy to agree. Francin doesn't know whether he is going to get a permanent contract. To make things worse his brother Pepin - eccentric, noisy and garrulous - turns up on an indefinite visit.
