The film evokes a childhood in rural Lithuania between the wars. A country boy, Tomaszek, lives on a rich estate, situated on the Polish border. He realizes that the Issa Valley he lives in is to be torn apart by internal political conflicts and unrests among the mixed population of Poles, Lithuanians, Jews and Russians. He, however, is captivated by a paradise surrounding him, the forest, and his fantasies.

The former head of the Institute of Science - Professor Molnar, returns to the Institute to seek treatment for his heart condition. The new director of the Institute, and his former assistant, Dr. Egberg had a falling out with Molnar after the latter considered his research unethical. However, after waking up from surgery, Molnar makes a horrifying discovery; Egberg has swapped their brains!

Presenting a different approach to life, the three brothers meet at their father's funeral.

Matylda reflects on her life on her 30th birthday.

An anxiety-riddled woman and her husband reside in a small, secluded house in the forest. They live a relatively peaceful life until one night when the woman appears to fall sick and die.

A pastor studying folklore in remote parts of 19th century Lithuania is invited to stay with a young nobleman. His mother is sequestered and mad. It seems she has been attacked by a bear as a young wife and local peasants whisper the young man may be the son of a bear. A doctor, who treats the mother with old-fashioned remedies, reveals this to the pastor. Young nobleman's wife is found with a bite and the man has disappeared into the woods.

Professionally active, childless, married woman loses her father during a business trip. With an overwhelming sense of transience and the fear of death, she doubts her attachment to her husband. It turns out that in marriage, too, he only plays his part, with greater or lesser conviction.

К концу 18 века, Польское государство оказывается под властью сразу трех стран — России, Австрии и Пруссии. Последняя надежда свободолюбивых поляков — французская армия, под чьи знамена добровольно встают герои фильма. Однако участие в наполеоновских походах приводит не к долгожданной независимости и объединению Польши, а к позорному созданию вассального Варшавского герцогства. Судьбы героев исторической драмы так же трагичны, как и судьба, их родины.

While hiding from the Germans in the forest, young Polish corporal tries hard to fulfill his order to take care of a wounded lieutenant and wait for the doctor and transportation to come.

Известие о нападении гитлеровской Германии на Польшу в 1939 году застает команду подводной лодки польского военного флота «Орел» в Балтийском море. Лодка уже не может войти в Гдынь, так как фарватер заминирован. Экипаж лодки оказался отрезанным от родины, почти безоружным. Немцы по пятам преследуют отважных моряков, и тем не менее они уходят от врага.
