Começou sua carreira artística na rádio aos 13 anos.  Estreou na TV Tupi em 1959, no teleteatro “TV Vanguarda”. Era um ativista da UNE (União Nacional dos Estudantes) na época em que ocorreu a revolução de 1964. Atuou no filme “Terra em Transe” de Glauber Rocha, em 1967. Por causa de sua orientação política (comunismo), sofreu perseguição política no regime militar e teve de viver clandestinamente como caminhoneiro, adotando o nome de Romeu. Atuou em várias novelas da TV Tupi e da TV Globo, sendo a primeira delas “Irmãos Coragem”, de 1970. Dirigiu programas humorísticos de Jô Soares e Chico Anysio na TV Globo. Foi o dublador de Tom Selleck, ator principal da série Magnum. Como membro do Partido Comunista Brasileiro, foi eleito vereador na cidade do Rio de Janeiro em 1989 e foi o autor da lei que criou a RioFilme.
