In 1838, the prisoners on Hachijo Island represent the furthest extreme of Japanese society. Instead of execution, they have been forced to eke out a dismal existence on the island, without help or support of any kind from those back on the main four islands.
Incredibly indolent cop Tomokawa spends his time making fun of his mentally challenged friend Sukemasa, riding his bike all over the city and sleeping with married women. But his whole world changes when he meets Yoko.
A submissive hooker goes about her trade, suffering abuse at the hands of Japanese salarymen and Yakuza types. She's unhappy about her work, and is apparently trying to find some sort of appeasement for the fact that her lover has married.
