Dewey Finn -Jack Black- es un guitarrista con delirios de grandeza que es expulsado de su banda. Desesperado por encontrar un trabajo ante su falta de dinero, suplanta la identidad de un profesor sustituto para dar clase en una escuela privada a los pequeños alumnos pre-adolescentes de 5o grado a los que intentará enseñarles el "rock & roll de alto voltaje". Además entre sus alumnos está Yuki, un guitarrista prodigio de 9 años que puede ayudar a Dewey a ganar la competición de bandas de música... y de paso solucionar sus problemas económicos.
En 1994 tuvieron lugar en Los Ángeles dos acontecimientos que sacudieron la tierra: el terremoto de Northridge y el nacimiento de Tenacious D, la banda liderada por Jack Black y Kyle Gass. Los dos se conocieron cuando eran miembros de la Actor’s Gang, una compañía de teatro de Los Ángeles fundada por Tim Robbins, y allí fue donde ambos descubrieron su amor por el rock and roll. Desde su primera actuación en el Al’s Bar de Los Ángeles, donde interpretaron su única canción, Tribute, hasta su revelación como la autoproclamada Mejor Banda de la Tierra, The D, como los conocen sus seguidores, han encantado a todo el que podido escucharlos. A gang of city children is secretly practicing to enter a musical competition. All of them plunder their parents' supplies in order to build their own stage and amplifiers. Baffled by these unexplained thefts, the parents decide to hold a meeting as their suspicions turn to a group of camper folks living across from their flat. The tables are turned when the residents take a camping holiday of their own and end up being mistrusted by the locals as much as they themselves did their own neighbors. Meanwhile, the children's gang meets a rival group of kids who are planning to enter the same competition.
