Segunda Guerra Mundial (1939-1945). Cefalonia (Grecia), 1940. El doctor Iannis (John Hurt) vive en las afueras del pueblo con su hija y alumna Pelagia (Penélope Cruz), la prometida de Mandras (Bale), un pescador que participa en la contienda contra los italianos. Pasan los meses y Pelagia no recibe respuesta a las numerosas cartas que le ha enviado a su novio. Segunda Guerra Mundial. Ocho soldados han recibido la orden de desembarcar en una pequeña e insignificante isla griega. Su misión es custodiarla, dado que tiene un alto valor estratégico. Cuando consiguen llegar a tierra, su nave se ha hundido y la radio se ha roto. El lugar, que al principio parecía desierto, en realidad está habitado por mujeres, ancianos y niños. Walla Walla Wiffle is an annual one day round-robin wiffleball tournament wherein 48 men from all over the country gather in Eastern Washington to play wiffleball. Most of the participants are in their 30s or 40s, married with children, highly educated and well-employed. The film documents the joy they take in being able to revert to the simplicity of their youth, if only for a day, while also showing the conflicts that arise from the inescapable responsibilities that come with jobs, relationships and families.
