Porto of My Childhood (2001)

The Philippines, 1972. Mysterious things are happening in a remote barrio. Wails are heard from the forest, cows are hacked to death, a man is found bleeding to death at the crossroad and houses are burned. Ferdinand E. Marcos announces Proclamation No. 1081 putting the entire country under Martial Law.

"Since childhood, I've had the good fortune of going through two mini depressions of happiness, and I'm serenely awaiting the third. This alone is enough for me to believe in a certain beauty to life and to have the pleasure of attempting to film it in all its forms (trees, animals, gods, humans...) and to do so when love is intense. The filmmaker has lost a part of innocence. It's so difficult to spot it around you, so difficult not to lose it during a film shoot. I'm grateful to those who you look at on screen. To stand up to time, I've a tactic, which is to dig into my stock of emotions and old images. Not so as to find what will never come back, but to discover the signs of spring in winter. The debut feature from Franco-Senegalese filmmaker Dyana Gaye charts the interconnected destinies of three far-flung sojourners across three continents. A quiet drama, about the anxieties of negotiating journeying to foreign countries and making a place for oneself in the world.

En un barrio moderno y anódino, donde todo está excesivamente organizado, viven monsieur Arpel, su esposa y su hijo Gérard, que se aburre soberanamente. La llegada de su tío, monsieur Hulot, un personaje soñador y lleno de fantasía, alterará ese mundo tan aséptico, sobre todo porque no tarda en convertirse en el mejor amigo de su sobrino.

Riley es una chica que disfruta o padece toda clase de sentimientos. Aunque su vida ha estado marcada por la Alegría, también se ve afectada por otro tipo de emociones. Lo que Riley no entiende muy bien es por qué motivo tiene que existir la Tristeza en su vida. Una serie de acontecimientos hacen que Alegría y Tristeza se mezclen en una peligrosa aventura que dará un vuelco al mundo de Riley.
