Desde que su mujer murió quemada en un accidente de coche, el Dr.Ledgard (Antonio Banderas), eminente cirujano plástico, se interesa por la creación de una nueva piel con la que hubiera podido salvarla. Un detective llamado Harry Hole investiga la desaparición de la madre de un niño. La única pista que se tiene es que su bufanda apareció colgada en un muñeco de nieve.
