The film is about the harrowing life of the musician, poet and actor Hans van Sweeden (1939-1963), who ended his life at the age of 24. Simultaneously, the film offers a poignant portrait of his contemporaries in the turbulent fifties and sixties and the children of the Nazis. It won the Golden Calf for Best Feature Film in 1983. Award of the Dutch film critics, 1983; the Belgian film critics Award, 1984; Best Dutch Documentary 1980-1990. (Wikipedia)

Kyodai Makes the Big Time
"Love is the only thing subject to negotiation in feature film debut which betrays admiration for the formal rigidity of Straub and Zwartjes." "The film, KYODAI MAKES THE BIG TIME, caused a commotion in the Netherlands when it won the Golden Calf for Best Film (the Dutch Oscar equivalent). The film went on to win the Jozef Von Sternberg Prize For Innovative Narrative Structure at the Mannheim Film Festival." "KYODAI MAKES THE BIG TIME – What was the public’s reaction to this? Your first film – is it like your first time having sex? Which I guess is a subjective question, but I’m thinking experimental, unnerving, liberating, a learning experience, a humbling experience, leaving you wanting more ? SEX SHOULD ALWAYS BE LIKE YOU'RE HAVING SEX FOR THE FIRST TIME."

The Magician
The scene opens on a theatrical stage. The magician enters from the wings, and making a bow to the audience, removes his coat and hat and they disappear mysteriously in the air. He then takes a white handkerchief from his pocket, holds it over his knees, and his long trousers disappear, and behold! he is clad in knickerbockers. He next makes a pass with a magic wand and a table suddenly appears before the audience, on which is a large pile of tissue paper. The magician takes up the paper and shakes it a few times and three live geese fly out upon the floor. This is a highly pleasing and mystifying subject.
