En un pequeño poblado de la costa de Nueva Zelanda, los aborígenes de la tribu Whangara creen que proceden de un único ancestro, cuya existencia se remonta mil años atrás. Su nombre es Paikea, y escapó de la muerte, tras volcar su canoa, montando a lomos de una ballena. Según la tradición, el jefe de los Whangara, el “Whale Rider”, el Paikea, tiene que ser un primogénito varón. Pero Pai, una niña de once años, cree que está destinada a ser la máxima autoridad de la tribu. Por ello, aunque adora a su abuelo Koro, se enfrentará con él y con mil años de tradición.
