Sinopsis
Sarajevo, 1992. They are called Ahmed, Lana, Sado, Saba, Sahbey, Beba, Nemanja, Marx, Matan. They live in and between wartimes. They have "nafaka", the destiny which was bestowed on them by God Almighty. They have enough gallows humor and courage to believe in freedom and happiness.
Se supone que la guerra en los Balcanes ha terminado, pero la batalla por la supervivencia apenas ha comenzado. Tras ser tiroteado durante una misión de reconocimiento en Bosnia, el piloto americano Chris Burnett (Owen Wilson) tendrá que luchar por sobrevivir y escapar de las tropas serbias. Bosnia, julio de 1995. Aida trabaja como traductora para la ONU en la pequeña ciudad de Srebrenica. Un grupo de periodistas británicos y norteamericanos cubre desde Sarajevo la guerra de Bosnia. Uno de ellos, Michael Henderson, encuentra en la ciudad un orfanato sometido día y noche a implacables bombardeos. Allí conoce a Emira, una niña a la que promete ayuda. A partir de entonces, trata de convencer a Nina, una asistente social norteamericana, para que le ayude a sacar ilegalmente a Emira del país.
In the opening stages of the Bosnian War, a small group of Serbian soldiers are trapped in a tunnel by a Muslim force.
A detachment of the Polish IFOR forces in Bosnia is led by Major Keller, who is being investigated for insubordination during a patrol in Srebrenica. The investigation is to be led by two arriving officers - Lieutenant Czacki and Major Kusz who will also replace Keller as CO. When the camp's RTO receives a communication from a downed Norwegian chopper, Keller ignores his standing orders and leads a platoon to rescue the crew.
El filme está compuesto de tres partes, respectivamente tituladas: Reino 1. Infierno; Reino 2: Purgatorio y Reino 3: Paraíso. El infierno, de una duración aproximada de siete u ocho minutos, se compone de distintas imágenes de guerra, sin orden cronológico o histórico. Aviones, tanques, buques de guerra, explosiones, fusilamientos, ejecuciones, poblaciones en fuga, campos devastados, ciudades destruidas, etc. Todo tanto en blanco y negro como en color. Las imágenes quedan mudas, acompañadas por cuatro frases y cuatro músicas (piano). El purgatorio, de aproximadamente una hora de duración, se desarrolla en nuestros días en la ciudad de Sarajevo -mártir entre otras - con ocasión de los Encuentro Europeos del Libro. Kym, an Australian tourist, decides to travel to Bosnia. Her guidebook leads her to Višegrad, a small town steeped in history, on the border of Bosnia and Serbia. After a night of insomnia in the 'romantic' Hotel Vilina Vlas, Kym discovers what happened there during the war. She can no longer be an ordinary tourist and her life will never be the same again.
Hadi travels to Croatia to complete his researches on Film-making. His friend Aziz who has heard about his trip gives him a photo and a VHS cassette asking him to look after a girl Fatemeh there. In London, during October 1993, England is playing Holland in the preliminaries of the World Cup. The Bosnian War is at its height, and refugees from the ex-Yugoslavia are arriving. Football rivals, and political adversaries from the Balkans all precipitate conflict and amusing situations.
