Sinopsis
A man leaves suddenly. Two men chase him. A woman in black and white. The landscape – the one outside and the one inside of the characters – takes over. Landscape of images and words.
El objetivo de Andrew Neiman, un joven y ambicioso baterista de jazz, es triunfar en el elitista Conservatorio de Música de la Costa Este en el que estudia. Marcado por el fracaso de la carrera literaria de su padre, Andrew alberga sueños de grandeza. Terence Fletcher, un profesor conocido tanto por su talento como por sus rigurosos métodos de enseñanza, dirige el mejor conjunto de jazz del Conservatorio. Cuando Fletcher elige a Andrew y para formar parte del conjunto musical que dirige, cambia para siempre la vida del joven. La pasión de Andrew por alcanzar la perfección se convierte en obsesión, al tiempo que su despiadado profesor lo lleva al límite de su capacidad y de su salud mental.
El Hombre con la Cámara, muy en la línea de "Berlín, sinfonía de una gran ciudad" (Berlin: Die Sinfonie der Großstadt, 1927), es un retrato de San Petersburgo compuesto por cientos de pinceladas fílmicas sobre la vida cotidiana en dicha ciudad. Podría decirse que se trata de un retrato puntillista en el que sólo la totalidad de los breves retazos permiten percibir San Petersburgo en su totalidad. Con la complicidad de su hermano, el operador Mikhail Kaufman, Vertov, fiel a su teorías, no permite ni por un momento que se pueda suponer que alguno de esos retazos pueda imaginarse inventado. Por ello en el vertiginoso montaje que plasma la fascinación de Vertov por el constructivismo y el futurismo, introduce constantemente imágenes del operador que con su cámara está filmando la realidad que le rodea.
