La historia, dirigida por Spike Jonze, nos cuenta el viaje que hace Max a través de un bosque que repentinamente crece en su habitación hacia el mar, donde embarcará días, semanas, meses y años hasta llegar a la isla donde viven los monstruos, seres de grandes dimensiones, peludos y con los ojos amarillos de los que cualquier niño tendría miedo.
