Max (Max Records), fantasiado de lobo, faz malcriações com sua mãe (Catherine Keener) por ciúmes de um amigo dela (Mark Ruffalo). Como castigo, é mandado para o quarto sem jantar. Max resolve fugir de casa e usa a imaginação para criar uma misteriosa ilha. Lá ele encontra vários monstros, que vivem em bando. Max afirma possuir poderes e acaba nomeado rei do grupo. Responsável por evitar que a tristeza tome conta do lugar, ele passa a criar uma série de jogos para mantê-los em constante diversão.

Joy e seu filho Jack vivem isolados em um quarto. O único contato que ambos têm com o mundo exterior é a visita periódica do Velho Nick, que os mantém em cativeiro. O filme começa em uma vida feliz, a casa superior confortável de classe média em Londres vitoriana. Uma noite, as três crianças vêem seus usher pai dois desconhecidos em seu estudo. Depois de uma discussão que ele deixa com eles e não retorna. Eles e sua queda mãe em tempos difíceis e, eventualmente, mudar para uma casa de campo no país. Ainda assim, manter o ânimo e encontrar maneiras de ajudar os outros. Fascinado pela ferrovia nas proximidades, eles acenam para os passageiros fielmente todos os dias, e sua vigilância e coragem evitam um acidente. Sua bondade acaba fazendo amizade com algumas pessoas importantes que podem ajudar a resolver o mistério de seu pai desaparecido.

O filme acompanha os eventos de diversas crianças durante o verão de 1976 na França e suas frustrações, problemas e às vezes a apressada passagem para a adolescência. Apresenta uma visão panorâmica das vivências de um grupo de crianças de idades variadas na pequena cidade de Thiers, mostrando as relações com os adultos e entre si, desde o berço até à escola primária. Em várias sequências que abordam desde acidentes domésticos, traquinagens, impulsos sexuais, primeiro amor e a violência infantil, procura demonstrar com serenidade como as crianças são extremamente engenhosas e com isso conseguem suportar muita coisa.
