Tras formar parte de la banda "Los lioneses", que atracaron media Francia en los 70, Edmond Vidal, alias "Momon", vive ya retirado del mundo del crimen. Tras el nacimiento de su séptimo nieto, recibe la noticia de que su compañero Serge, con el que se inició en el mundo criminal y al que quiere como a un hermano, ha sido detenido después de burlar a la justicia durante trece años. La amistad y la lealtad hacen que Momon se plantee sacar de la cárcel a su amigo. A la vez, la película narra la vida criminal de Momon y Serge en su juventud
