Basada en la novela homónima de Theodor Fontane, trata sobre el estricto código moral de los prusianos durante los tiempos de Bismarck. Effi Briest es una joven que se casa con un hombre mayor que ella, el Baron von Instetten. Tras unos años en los que la pareja vive feliz, la amistad de ella con el Mayor Crampas supondrá un conflicto ético que concluirá con un duelo entre el marido ofendido y el supuesto amante.
It is a love story between a prostitute and an artist. It was one of the first German films to break several taboos: nudity, suicide and euthanasia. In the Germany of the '50s, this caused a lot of negative reactions by the politicians and the Roman Catholic Church. The opposition reached the degree of banning the film and scandalizing it which paradoxically made it one of the landmarks in the history of film.
