Historia

Director de cine portugués, nacido en Lamego. La dificultad para rodar películas en Portugal, donde apenas existen productores debido a que la amortización de los filmes se presenta siempre dificultosa, hizo que Botelho no pudiera comenzar su carrera hasta la edad de veintisiete años y utilizando para ello como puerta de entrada el documental educativo. Junto a Jorge Alves Silva realizó dentro de esa línea, Un projecto de Educaçao (1976), al que seguirían O alto do cobre (sobre un yacimiento de este mineral) y el cortometraje Alexandre e Rosa (ambas de 1978). Pero como las dificultades para seguir haciendo cine eran numerosas, optó por introducirse poco a poco en las áreas de producción y escritura de guiones televisivos. Su retorno a la pantalla grande, y debut en el largometraje, ocurriría después de un silencio de tres años. Conversa acabada (1982) era la ambiciosa ilustración experimental del intercambio de cartas entre Fernando Pessoa y Mario de Sa Carneiro, dos de los poetas modernistas más significativos del siglo XIX en Portugal. Su reducido éxito le posibilitaría emprender otro no menos arriesgado proyecto, Un adeus portugues (1985), donde se mezclaban dos historias ambientadas en diferentes épocas. Tiempos difíciles (1988), adaptación de la novela de Charles Dickens, abrió una nueva etapa en su filmografía. Financiada en parte por el museo de arte Calouste Gulbenkian, con la coproducción de una empresa inglesa, fue exhibida en diversos países y saludada por su originalidad. Dada su creciente fama entre los cinéfilos franceses y españoles fue invitado entonces a dirigir el capítulo sobre la intangibilidad del aire, No dia dos meus anos (1991), dentro de una serie de cuatro largometrajes dedicados a los elementos atmosféricos. Sin embargo, el tema que le había sido impuesto acabó siendo utilizado para abordar un argumento de ficción sobre una persona que el día de su setenta cumpleaños decide relatar a la familia y a los vecinos numerosos hechos de su larga vida. El posterior Aqui na terra (1993) será en cierto modo el complemento lógico a dicho film, casi como una secuela: un rico financiero que escucha sonidos en el aire inaudibles para el resto de la humanidad abandona su trabajo, y dedica todos sus esfuerzos a la ayuda de un joven que busca a su prometida y al hijo que ésta ha tenido como consecuencia de una violación. Amante del cine intimista, Joao Botelho ha mostrado con tranquilidad los más imperceptibles acontecimientos de la vida cotidiana: Su trayectoria en este terreno cristalizó con Tres palmeiras, cuyo germen fue igualmente el capítulo de una serie cinematográfica surgida dentro del proyecto conmemorativo de Lisboa Capital Europea de la Cultura en 1994. Tráfico (1998), presentada en la Mostra Internacional de Venecia, marca por su parte una nueva inflexión en su cine, al mezclar el humor de un Pedro Almodóvar con imágenes surrealistas al más puro estilo Luis Buñuel y sentidos homenajes a Manoel de Oliveira.

As a result of the rape, Cecelia is pregnant. One day, while driving in the mountains, Miguel gives Cecelia's boyfriend a ride. The two of them chance upon her sitting amid the rocks with her infant baby.
