Hacia 1930, en un pequeño pueblo de Jutlandia occidental, el viejo Morten Borgen dirige la granja de Borgensgaard. Tiene tres hijos: Mikkel, Johannes y Anders. El primero está casado con Inger y tiene dos hijas pequeñas, aunque en estos momentos Inger está embarazada y esperan el tercero.
