보겐 농가의 둘째 아들 요하네스는 정신이 쇠약해진 후 자신이 예수 그리스도라고 생각하며 여기저기를 배회하며 성경구절들을 인용해 설교를 한다. 장남 미켈의 아내인 잉거는 그런 그를 불쌍하게 여긴다. 그리고 셋째 아들인 안더스는 종교적으로 대립되는 재단사 집안의 딸과 결혼하려고 한다. 어느 날 셋째 아이를 임신 중이던 잉거가 출산도중 의식을 잃게 되고 보겐가에는 신앙의 위기가 찾아오는데... 목사이기도 했던 극작가 카이 뭉크의 <말씀>을 원작으로 한 이 영화는 신앙의 의미를 묻는 작품으로 칼 테오도르 드레이어의 최고작 중 하나로 꼽힌다.
