Moe, Rose and Lee Baumler are members of an upper class family who find the world completely changed when they lose everything in the stock market crash of 1929. Lee, a college-age young man, who now faces no possibility of entering college, decides to go on the road to see what is happening to the rest of the country.

Screenplay
Macon Leary (William Hurt), un escritor de guías de viajes para hombres de negocios, acaba de sufrir un terrible golpe al morir su hijo en un accidente. The Professor
El ridículamente bautizado Pondo Sinatra llega al primer año de universidad con una sola cosa en mente, perder la virginidad. Debido a que fue criado en una granja y carece de cualquier tipo de sensibilidad que le acerque a cumplir su sueño, su carnalmente exitoso amigo Studly y el bedel afroamericano de la universidad, Elbow, tratan de ayudarle. Los esfuerzos son en vano debido a la incompetencia de Pondo, quién sólo después de numerosos fracasos, cambios de imagen, intentos de crear afrodisiacos, consumo masivo de drogas y varios intentos de suicidio, consigue su cometido tras vender su alma al Diablo por un “pedazo de culo”.
Rural Ticket Agent
Newly-widowed Mabel Lederer, who has psychic and mediumistic abilities, sells her house and belongings, changes her name, and moves to a new town. There she rents a room in a boarding house and holds a seance with the other tenants, with comical results.
