Tras el fallido intento de asesinato durante una misión, el francotirador estadounidense Mike Stevens (Armie Hammer) pisa una mina terrestre en medio del desierto de Afganistán. Aislado y perdido en mitad de la nada, queda atrapado y dramáticamente amenazado por el explosivo y por los peligros del desierto de arena. Mike deberá sobrevivir a la naturaleza hostil que le rodea, luchando contra el sol abrasador, la deshidratación, el cansancio y los depredadores. Y sobre todo, deberá hacer frente al peligroso efecto psicológico de la soledad mientras permanece inmóvil en la arena.
