Corre el año 1991, y al veterano agente de la CIA Nathan Muir tan sólo le queda un día para retirarse, cuando recibe la noticia de que aquel que fuera su discípulo, Tom Bishop, está en un buen lío. Hecho preso en una cárcel extranjera bajo la acusación de espionaje, Bishop ha sido hallado culpable y se prevé ejecutarlo en 24 horas. Temiendo un incidente de alcance internacional, la CIA decide que es muy arriesgado tratar de salvarlo. Así las cosas, todo depende de Muir. Habiendo toda una nueva generación al cargo de la Agencia, Muir, partidario de los antiguos métodos, está a punto de dejar de pertenecer a la organización a la que ha servido durante tantos años, y deberá hallar el modo de burlarla mientras batalla por conseguir más detalles acerca de la situación de Bishop.

El joven y brillante especialista en medicina forense camarada Bukarov, toma posesión de su cargo y pronto comienza a trabajar en el caso del asesinato de un niño. Sin haber tenido tiempo de examinar el cuerpo, a Bukarov le llegan siete cadáveres más. Tras un estudio concienzudo, comunica a sus superiores que en la zona hay un asesino en serie, y pide medios para detenerlo.
Siglo XIX. En una idílica localidad costera alemana vive Laurin, una niña de 9 años con su madre Flora, su padre Arne y su abuela Olga. Arne es marinero y debido a su trabajo, pasa largos períodos de tiempo lejos de su familia. Una noche Flora muere bajo circunstancias extrañas en lo que parece un horrible accidente. Dos años después, el nuevo profesor Van Rees comienza su trabajo en la escuela. Laurin empieza a tener visiones y sueños que torturan su alma frágil, y que la convencen que la muerte de su madre no fue un simple accidente. Savanyú and his friend work at a plant. After the monotonous shifts they engage in the pleasures of the afternoon and the night, i.e. parties and concerts. Savanyú dates Juli, they are already engaged. The young men live as sub-tenants, the young women in workers' hostels. None of these places are suited for spending time together. They are in need of an apartment. Out of the ruinous apartment which they lay siege on, however, they are sent away by the otherwise friendly policeman. At a concert held in the Park of Youth, Juli gets to know Géza. They flirt, then go to the country with a pop-group. Savanyú and his friends follow them. A minor fight cools the atmosphere.

This film is based on the logic of the associations, telling the story of teenagers of the day. Three boys find shelter from a storm in a villa at Lake Balaton. When the owners suddenly appear, only two of them can escape. Kiki is stuck in the larder. Waiting for his release, he recalls different stories in his mind, memories and the images of his imagination are mingled.
