Esta es la verdadera historia de Freddy y Walter, dos jóvenes judíos eslovacos, que fueron deportados a Auschwitz en 1942. El 10 de abril de 1944, después de una planificación meticulosa y con la ayuda y la resistencia de sus internos, logran escapar. Mientras los presos que habían dejado atrás se mantienen firmes con valentía contra los oficiales nazis, los dos hombres están impulsados por la esperanza de que sus pruebas puedan salvar vidas.
