Kate intenta mejorar su posición en la agencia de publicidad donde trabaja, pero no lo consigue ya que no tiene la suficiente estabilidad, pues no tiene novio ni nada que la ate a la compañía. Por ello se inventa una historia sobre su compromiso con Nick, un tipo al que conoció en la boda de unos amigos. Todo parece ir bien para Kate, incluso consigue llamar la atención de un colega por el que se sentía atraída, pero todo se complica cuando tiene que presentar a su novio al jefe.

Max Baron (James Spader), un brillante ejecutivo publicitario que vive en San Luis, está de luto por la muerte de su esposa. Una madrugada, conoce casualmente a Nora Baker (Susan Sarandon) y su vida da un vuelco inesperado. Nora, una mujer muy independiente y práctica, trabaja en una hamburguesería, vive en un barrio marginal y tiene quince años más que Max. T, as most of his friends, lives in a self-constructed 'house', built on top of an old building in the city. Their one passion is 'combat'. Combat is a dance/streetfight during which the contestants try to push each other out of the arena, while not allowed to actually touch each other. When drugdealers move into the neighbourhood and kill T's best friend he embarks on a mission to eradicate the drug-presence in the neigbourhood. His friends are reluctant to help though, knowing what happened to T's friend when he crossed them.

The Five Forty-Eight, drawn from a Cheever story about the fictional New York suburb of Shady Hill, concerns an advertising man, John Blake (Laurence Luckinbill), who is emotionally estranged from his wife and those around him. His disturbed secretary, Miss Dent (Mary Beth Hurt), whom he has seduced and then fired and discarded, pursues him harrowingly, and in a final scene in which she holds him at gunpoint in a field beyond the Shady Hill railroad station, she forces him to confront the squalor of his life.
O Youth and Beauty!

Cash Bentley and his wife Louise lead an average upper-middle-class life in suburbia, with a nice home and two fine children. But Cash grows increasingly unsettled in his life, yearning for the glories of his athletic youth and watching them fade further in the distance with accumulating age. Louise worries about him as his difficulties with mid-life pull him further away from happiness and comfort with his family.
