En una veloz carroza tirada por caballos, dos jóvenes mujeres se arrancan las vestimentas del siglo XVIII y apresuradamente se disfrazan de hombre. Son la Princesa y Corine, su dama de compañía. La Princesa ha heredado el trono usurpado por su padre. Por derecho pertenece al Príncipe Agis, de quien ella se ha enamorado. Sólo le ha visto una vez desde lejos, pero se propone conquistar su corazón y devolverle el trono. Sabe que debe ser astuta, ya que Agis ha sido educado para odiarla profundamente. Para conseguir su amor, la Princesa deberá conquistar antes a un filósofo y su hermana que viven con ellos. En consecuencia, se encuentra pivotando entre sus personajes masculinos y femeninos en una enredada tela de araña de complicidades y emociones.

Four lighthearted stories set in the idyllic Italian countryside: an old grouch finds himself followed by a stray dog; a lonely widow spies on her newly-wed son and daughter-in-law; a German tourist tries to seduce a younger nurse; a man wanders in the summer. The fourth segment was cut by Miramax for the US distribution.
