El joven estadounidense J.D. Flitner llega a Asunción para cerrar un trato con El Brasiguayo, un poderoso capo mafioso. Gatillo, mano derecha de El Brasiguayo, busca sobrepasar a su jefe, dejando en una situación comprometedora a Flitner. Sin que lo sepa, la vida de J.D. Flitner penderá de un hilo cuando salga a explorar la ciudad y se pierda en el laberinto de la noche.

Victoria is a taciturn and shabby young woman who walks around collecting herbs from the forest. She is homeless and sleeps in the open air. She believes in God and has kept her virginity. A young doctor called Juan Bautista, who suffers from chronic migraine, arrives in town to write his thesis on neurosurgery. Victoria falls in love with the doctor from the start. She asks help from her two-faced friend Malena who embellishes her. Malena even gives Victoria a new wardrobe and make-up. Victoria manages to be hired as the doctor's maid. Victoria makes an attempt to get closer to Juan Bautista supplying him with some herbs for his migraine trying to seduce him and to show her love for him.

En 1884, se le pide al famoso pintor Juan Manuel Blanes, de Uruguay, que cree un retrato de José Artigas. Solo hay un dibujo de su rostro, hecho en su vejez, por lo que Blanes debe imaginar cómo se veía leyendo sus ideas y aprendiendo sobre su vida.
