Anand Kumar (Hrithik Roshan) proviene de una familia muy humilde de la India. A pesar de sus escasos recursos, consigue ir a una escuela pública, donde desarrolla su interés por las matemáticas. Después de graduarse, publica un artículo sobre la teoría de los números, motivo por el que es aceptado en la Universidad de Cambrige. Sin embargo, la muerte de su padre le obliga a dejar sus estudios y volver a Patna, su ciudad natal. Allí dará clases como profesor, donde orientará a un grupo de estudiantes económicamente subdesarrollados para entrar en el programa del Instituto Internacional de Tecnología (IIT).
