After being accused wrongly of theft, a slightly addled servant runs away to the city, carrying as his only real possession an axe, which he claims to have killed a tiger with. He takes up life among India's throngs of city-dwelling homeless, and for a little while almost has a decent time of it. He has a girlfriend, and one good friend, and gets by through begging and doing odd jobs.
Nupur Chatterji has fled from her home in Delhi, resisting an arranged marriage with a man she dislikes. She comes to Calcutta to her college friend, but as her home is not safe she takes shelter in the house of one Anjan Mukherjee. Though initially annoyed, Anjan, a bachelor and a music director cum singer from Lucknow, comes to empathise with Nupur. In this situation enters the great detective Bhanu with Jahar, his assistant, for by now Dr. Digambar Chatterji has declared a prize money of ten thousand rupees for finding his missing daughter.

The school of a remote and poor village shut down, the head master Krishna Prasanna (Chhabi) migrates to city in search of job. He moves with family, wife Labanya (Karuna), nubile daughter (Ranjana) and very young son. He takes residence with his wife's brother. He meets per chance one of his ex students, of whom he used to take free evening classes and many of whom got merit scholarship and became cream of society, a doctor, a judge, successful lawyer, manager of a big bank and so on. Can he cross the barrier and meet them? All have big bungalows and office with watchmen to stop. If he managed to meet them, will they recall his contribution and help their benefactor?
