Justo al norte de Londres viven Wendy, Andy y sus gemelas de veintitantos años, Natalie y Nicola. Wendy trabaja en una tienda, dirige ejercicios aeróbicos en una escuela primaria, bromea como un vaudevillian, acuerda ser camarera en el nuevo restaurante de un amigo y adora a Andy, un cocinero que pospone para siempre los proyectos de remodelación de su casa, y con un amigo borracho, compra un paquete roto Abajo vagón de almuerzo. Natalie, con el pelo corto y aseado y una actitud ágil y divertida, es fontanero; ella tiene un feriado planeado en Estados Unidos, pero poco más. El último es Nicola, un hombre extraño: un gruñido, anteojos grandes, cigarrillo, cabello despeinado, dedos nerviosos, bulímico, desempleado e infeliz. La forma en que interactúan y juegan el conflicto familiar y el amor es el tema de la película.

Vic Mathews enseña una clase remediadora en la Escuela Bendita de Edith Semple en Escocia. Joseph Goldman (Fernando Rey) is a washed-up Hollywood actor making a living in the dinner-theater circuit. Accompanied by his wife Sarah (Carole Regnier), Goldman meets Frederique (Berangere Bonvoisin), who is hiding from her former lover. French financier Arthur (Fabrice Luchini) hopes to get into the film industry and bends the ear of a British director (Michael Medwin). The talkative film has little action, and none of the characters evoke much interest or resolve their dilemma.
