Los "mushi" son una suerte de espíritus parasitarios que flotan por todas partes sin ser vistos, y que afectan a los humanos de muy diversas maneras. Son algo así como "El fantasmal espíritu de la naturaleza que respira dentro de todo ser vivo... y muerto". Ginko, que puede verlos, se ha convertido en "mushishi", un experto en tales criaturas que ejerce como sanador.
