Katsuhiro Ôtomo, famoso por sus filmes de animación (en especial "Akira"), dirige ahora una película de ciencia ficción, basada en un manga de Yuki Urushibara, que trata sobre Ginko, un joven maestro sanador que usa una extrañas forma de vida en sus curaciones. Los "mushi" son una suerte de espíritus parasitarios que flotan por todas partes sin ser vistos, y que afectan a los humanos de muy diversas maneras. Son algo así como "El fantasmal espíritu de la naturaleza que respira dentro de todo ser vivo... y muerto". Ginko, que puede verlos, se ha convertido en "mushishi", un experto en tales criaturas que ejerce como sanador.
