Historia
Director de cine italiano, nacido en Liguria. Estudió arquitectura antes de decidirse a escribir guiones cinematográficos. Trabajó también en revistas de cine y escribió guiones radiofónicos. Desde sus primeras películas, Un golpe de pistola (1942) y Zazá (1943), se adscribió al grupo de los jóvenes realizadores que huían del estilo de hacer cine de después de la guerra, atendiendo con especial cuidado a la ambientación, a la dirección y al detalle en sus filmes. Entró de lleno en el neorrealismo con Mi hijo profesor (1946), perfilándose en lo que más tarde se llamaría Cinema verité: el estilo típico del neorrealismo, con películas más descriptivas que narrativas. Sus obras más importantes son Romeo y Julieta (1954), Si tu estuvieras (1957), Infierno en la ciudad (1959) o Una breve estación (1969).
